There are different types of angels mentioned in the Bible. Great saints of the Church such as St. Dionysius, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Gregory have believed there to be nine choirs of angels. From their teachings we learn there are angels, archangels, principalities, thrones, dominations, powers, virtues, cherubim and seraphim. Verses about these choirs of angels are mentioned in both the Old and New Testament Bible.

What are angels?
Angels are pure and holy spiritual beings that live in union with God. They do not have a body like you and I do. They did, however, have to go through a time of testing before they could enter into the presence of God. They are far superior to us in terms of power, wisdom, and intelligence. The Church teaches the angels watch over us, they help protect us, and they pray to God for us. Each angel is its own species, and there are different choirs or ranks of angels, which is what this page is about.
St. Augustine says: “‘Angel’ is the name of their office, not of their nature. If you seek the name of their nature, it is ‘spirit’; if you seek the name of their office, it is ‘angel’: from what they are, ‘spirit’, from what they do, ‘angel.'” With their whole beings the angels are servants and messengers of God. #1 Choir – The Seraphim
The seraphim are known to be the highest order of angels in heaven. The name Seraphim in Hebrew means the burning or fiery ones. They are mentioned in the book of Isaiah and possibly mentioned in the 4th chapter of Revelation. They are known for their love of God and their close proximity to God. The book of Isaiah says the seraphim have six wings. Isaiah says they use their wings to cover their face and feet.
Why do the seraphim stretch forth their wings? There is no other reason than the statement made by the apostle: “God, who dwells in unapproachable light. – St. John Chrysostom
Seraphim were stationed above; each of them had six wings: with two they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they hovered. Isaiah 6:2
One cried out to the other: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts! All the earth is filled with his glory!” Isaiah 6:3
Then one of the seraphim flew to me, holding an ember which he had taken with tongs from the altar. Isaiah 6:6
He touched my mouth with it. “See,” he said, “now that this has touched your lips, your wickedness is removed, your sin purged.” Isaiah 6:7
#2 Choir – The Cherubim
“What do the two cherubim signify but the two Testaments?” – St. Gregory the Great
According to the Church Fathers, the word cherubim means “the fullness of knowledge.” Cherubim are of the highest order of angels in the angelic world. It would seem because of their close proximity to God in heaven, the cherubim are infused with His wisdom. Cherubim are also guardians. God placed cherubim to guard the garden of Eden and the Tree of Life after the departure of Adam and Eve. God also ordered Moses to make images of cherubim on both sides of the tabernacle. Thus, cherubim are the guardians and protectors of holy places and holy things in this world.
He expelled the man, stationing the cherubim and the fiery revolving sword east of the garden of Eden, to guard the way to the tree of life. Genesis 3:24
Make two cherubim of beaten gold for the two ends of the cover; Exodus 25:18
Make one cherub at one end, and the other at the other end, of one piece with the cover, at each end. Exodus 25:19
The cherubim shall have their wings spread out above, sheltering the cover with them; they shall face each other, with their faces looking toward the cover. Exodus 25:20

He placed the cherubim in the inmost part of the house; the wings of the cherubim were spread wide, so that one wing of the first touched the side wall and the wing of the second touched the other wall; the wings pointing to the middle of the room touched each other. 1 Kings 6:27

The walls of the house on all sides of both the inner and the outer rooms had carved figures of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers. 1 Kings 6:29

On the panels within the frames there were lions, oxen, and cherubim; and on the frames likewise, above and below the lions and oxen, there were wreaths in hammered relief. 1 Kings 7:29

David and all Israel went up to Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-jearim, of Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, which was known by the name “LORDenthroned upon the cherubim.” 1 Chronicles 13:6

#3 Choir – The Thrones
The thrones have their dwelling in heaven with the Most High God. And for this reason thrones are God’s pure, holy angels, and it would seem they have various levels of authority given to them by God. Thrones (Greek: thronos) are mentioned by St. Paul in Colossians (1:16). Despite their exalted and hallowed status, thrones might be the first to tell us that Christ is seated at the right hand of the Father, far above them all.
Thrones are commonly understood to refer to the celestial hierarchy of Angels, though as to their particular rank nothing certain is known. – St. Dionysius

#4 Choir – The Dominations
The dominations (also known as dominions) make up the highest rank in the 2nd hierarchy of angels. According to St. Jerome, St. Paul, who was highly educated in the Torah, may have learned about these ranks of angels from a secret Hebrew teaching, or possibly from an ancient Hebrew teaching that has been lost. Dominions are known to specialize in governance and directing God’s divine will to the angels.
St. Paul says not merely “above” but “far above.” For God is higher than the powers on high. – St. John Chrysostom

#5 Choir – The Virtues
“Whoever wishes to live perfectly should do nothing but disdain what Christ disdained on the cross and desire what he desired, for the cross exemplifies every virtue.” – St. Thomas Aquinas
The virtues (also known as authorities) are mentioned in several of St. Paul’s letters, including his letter to the 1st Corinthians and his letter to the Ephesians. The authorities are also mentioned in the 1st book of St. Peter. Like some of the other ranks of angels mentioned, perhaps the key thing to know about the authorities is that there are some that are benign (angels) while there are other authorities that are hostile (demons). Despite their status and share of influence given to them by God over the cosmos, both of the verses in St. Peter and Paul’s letters make it clear that Christ is seated at the right hand of God far above them all and under His authority.
Then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to his God and Father, when he has destroyed every sovereignty and every authority and power. 1 Corinthians 15:24

#6 Choir – The Powers
“In the first coming Christ endured the cross, despising the shame; in the second coming he will be in glory, escorted by an army of angels.” – St. Cyril of Jerusalem
The powers (Greek: dynamis) are the last choir in the 2nd hierarchy of angels. The powers are mentioned in the same cluster of verses in the books of the New Testament about various choirs of angels: Romans, 1st Corinthians, Ephesians, Colossians, and 1st Peter. Powers are also mentioned in the Old Testament in the Book of Daniel. An alternative translation would be hosts, as in “the LORD of hosts.” The LORD of hosts is in reference to God and His angelic armies, but it can also mean the Lord of the armies of Israel, thus it is difficult to distinguish whether the LORD of hosts Old Testament verses (over 250) are in reference to armies of angels, armies of Israel, or both. In regards to the New Testament verses, the powers are angelic forces that influence and help govern or manage the known cosmos by God’s divine will. The Bible mentions that there are both good and evil powers (angels and demons).
The good powers help to protect us from the hostile powers and evil spirits.
All you powers, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever. Daniel 3:61

#7 Choir – The Principalities
The angels belong to Christ because they were created through and for him: “for in him all things were created in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or authorities – all things were created through him and for him.” Source: Catechism of the Catholic Church #331
The principalities angels are one of the most popular choirs of angels mentioned in the Bible. Mentioned by St. Paul in several of his epistles, principalities are the highest choir of angels in the 3rd hierarchy. The good principalities help assist us here on earth while the evil principalities seek our destruction. The first hierarchy of angels (seraphim, cherubim, and thrones) are known to dwell with God in heaven. The second hierarchy of angels (dominions, authorities, and powers) are an intermediary hierarchy between heaven and earth who govern order. The third hierarchy of angels (principalities, archangels, and angels) are known to dwell in the cosmic heavens and the earthly realm. They serve as guardians and influencers of nations, cities, communities, churches, etc. Principalities play a vital role in God’s plan of salvation.

#8 Choir – The Archangels
“Those who deliver messages of lesser importance are called angels; and those who proclaim messages of supreme importance are called archangels.” – St. Gregory the Great
In the book of Tobit, the archangel St. Raphael declares to Tobias and his father that he is one of seven angels who stand and serve before the glory of the Lord. The seven intercede for us and present our prayers before the presence of the Almighty God. Only three of the seven archangels are mentioned in the Bible: St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael. All three of the archangels are active in the Old Testament. St. Michael and St. Gabriel in the book of Daniel, while St. Raphael serves as a guide, guardian, and messenger in the book of Tobit. In the New Testament, St. Gabriel delivers important messages (the birth of Jesus!) to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah in St. Luke’s Gospel. The warrior St. Michael and his army of angels defeat Satan and his demons in the book of Revelation.
For the Lord himself, with a word of command, with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God, will come down from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 1 Thessalonians 4:16
St. Michael
St. Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle! St. Michael is the angelic leader of God’s armies of angels in the heavens. St. Michael’s name means, “Who is like God?” St. Michael and his army of angels defeated the devil and his demons in the book of Revelation. St. Michael contended with a principality in the book of Daniel to the help of St. Gabriel, and he disputed with the devil about the body of Moses in the Letter of St. Jude. St. Michael is credited with doing much more throughout Church history. He is the patron and guardian angel of Israel and a defender of the Church.
Christian tradition has revered St. Michael and honored his role as the great spiritual warrior fighting for the Church. From early times Christians have asked for his help in the heat of the battle with the dragon.” – Dr. Paul Thigpen
Old Testament
But the prince of the kingdom of Persia stood in my way for twenty-one days, until finally Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me. I left him there with the prince of the kingdom of Persia, Daniel 10:13
But I shall tell you what is written in the book of truth. No one supports me against these except Michael,your prince, Daniel 10:21
“At that time there shall arise Michael, the great prince, guardian of your people; It shall be a time unsurpassed in distress since the nation began until that time. At that time your people shall escape, everyone who is found written in the book. Daniel 12:1
New Testament
“In the liturgy of the Mass, St. Michael is regarded as the Angel who leads the souls of the faithful departed to Heaven: ‘Deliver them from the lion’s mouth, that hell engulf them not, that they fall not into darkness; but let Michael, the holy standard-bearer, bring them into the holy light.'” – Fr. Pascale Parente
Yet the archangel Michael, when he argued with the devil in a dispute over the body of Moses, did not venture to pronounce a reviling judgment upon him but said, “May the Lord rebuke you!” Jude 1:9
Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, Revelation 12:7
St. Gabriel
St. Gabriel is God’s holy messenger in the New Testament. His name, Gabriel, means “the strength of God,” or “the power of God,” and it would suffice to say he is one powerful angel. St. Gregory the Great said that St. Gabriel is the greatest of angels because only the most powerful angel of God could be sent by God to deliver a message of such supreme importance as Gabriel did delivering the mysterious message of “The Annunciation,” which is the announcement of the Incarnation of the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ, who was born of the Blessed Virgin Mary. St. Gabriel delivered the message to the Blessed Virgin Mary with respect, tact, and reverence.
St. Gabriel was also sent by God to tell the priest and prophet Zechariah that he and his wife, Elizabeth, would conceive a son, John the Baptist, who would be the forerunner of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. We also witness a glimpse of the angel’s power in St. Luke’s gospel when he made Zechariah temporarily mute for his lack of belief in the angel’s message from God about their conception of the child, John.
“Hail Mary, Full of Grace, the Lord is with thee!!”
If the strength of St. Michael is the with the sword, perhaps St. Gabriel’s strength could be considered to be a battering ram, as it is his words that we repeat again and again when we recite the rosary in prayer. Consider the words of the Blessed Virgin Mary to our beloved saint of the Church, St. Dominic, about the holy rosary:
“Dear Dominic, do you know which weapon the Blessed Trinity wants to use to reform the world?…I want you to know that, in this kind of warfare, the battering ram has always been the Angelic Psalter, which is the foundation stone of the New Testament.” – Our Lady to St. Dominic
Old Testament
And on the Ulai I heard a human voice that cried out, “Gabriel,explain the vision to this man.” Daniel 8:16
I was still praying, when the man, Gabriel, whom I had seen in vision before, came to me in flight at the time of the evening offering. Daniel 9:21
New Testament
The angel of the Lord (Gabriel) appeared to him, standing at the right of the altar of incense. Luke 1:11
But the angel (Gabriel) said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall name him John. Luke 1:13
Then Zechariah said to the angel (Gabriel), “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.” Luke 1:18
And the angel said to him in reply, “I am Gabriel, who stand before God. I was sent to speak to you and to announce to you this good news. Luke 1:19
In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, Luke 1:26
And coming to her, he (Gabriel) said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.” Luke 1:28
Then the angel (Gabriel) said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Luke 1:30
But Mary said to the angel (Gabriel), “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” Luke 1:34
St. Raphael
St. Raphael stands before God as an angel of healing. His name means, “God heals” or “Healer of God.” Unlike St. Michael and St. Gabriel, St. Raphael is not mentioned in the New Testament by name. He is, however, highly involved in the book of Tobit in the Old Testament. In the book of Tobit, St. Raphael serves as a guardian and guide for the young man Tobias. Not only did he lead Tobias safely along his journey, but he also led him to marriage and prosperity, and he healed Tobias’ father from blindness. St. Raphael is unique in that while other angels in the Bible make brief appearances and leave, St. Raphael was with Tobias during his entire journey, even protecting him from a demon, and in this way, he is symbolic of the guardian angels who are with us at our side throughout our entire lives. St. Raphael revealed to Tobias and his father that he is “one of seven holy angels who stand before the glory of the Lord.”
“The angels take whatever form the Lord may command, and thus they appear to people and reveal the Divine mysteries to them.” – St. John of Damascus

So Raphael was sent to heal them both: to remove the white scales from Tobit’s eyes, so that he might again see with his own eyes God’s light; and to give Sarah, the daughter of Raguel, as a wife to Tobiah, the son of Tobit, and to rid her of the wicked demon Asmodeus. For it fell to Tobiah’s lot to claim her before any others who might wish to marry her. Tobit 3:17
Tobiah went out to look for someone who would travel with him to Media, someone who knew the way. He went out and found the angel Raphael standing before him (though he did not know that this was an angel of God). Tobit 5:4
He (Raphael) replied, “Very well, I will wait; but do not be long.” Tobit 5:8
Tobiah went out to summon him, saying, “Young man, my father is calling for you.” When Raphael entered the house, Tobit greeted him first. He replied, “Joyful greetings to you!” Tobit answered, “What joy is left for me? Here I am, a blind man who cannot see the light of heaven, but must remain in darkness, like the dead who no longer see the light! Though alive, I am among the dead. I can hear people’s voices, but I do not see them.” The young man said, “Take courage! God’s healing is near; so take courage!” Tobit then said: “My son Tobiah wants to go to Media. Can you go with him to show him the way? I will pay you your wages, brother.” He answered: “Yes, I will go with him, and I know all the routes. I have often traveled to Media and crossed all its plains so I know well the mountains and all its roads.” Tobit 5:10
He (Raphael) replied, “Why? What need do you have for a tribe? Aren’t you looking for a hired man?” Tobit replied, “I only want to know, brother, whose son you truly are and what your name is.” Tobit 5:12
He answered, “I am Azariah (Raphael), son of the great Hananiah, one of your own kindred.” Tobit 5:13
I will even add a bonus to your wages!” The young man (Raphael) replied: “I will go with him. Do not fear. In good health we will leave you, and in good health we will return to you, for the way is safe.” Tobit 5:16
Tobit said, “Blessing be upon you, brother.” Then he called his son and said to him: “Son, prepare whatever you need for the journey, and set out with your kinsman. May God in heaven protect you on the way and bring you back to me safe and sound; may his angel accompany you for your safety, son.” Tobit 5:17
For a good angel will go with him, his journey will be successful, and he will return in good health.” Tobit 5:22
When the young man left home, accompanied by the angel (Raphael), the dog followed Tobiah out and went along with them. Both journeyed along, and when the first night came, they camped beside the Tigris River. Tobit 6:2
But the angel (Raphael) said to the young man, “Grab the fish and hold on to it!” He seized the fish and hauled it up on dry land. Tobit 6:4
The angel (Raphael) then told him: “Slit the fish open and take out its gall, heart, and liver, and keep them with you; but throw away the other entrails. Its gall, heart, and liver are useful for medicine.” Tobit 6:5
After Tobiah had slit the fish open, he put aside the gall, heart, and liver. Then he roasted and ate part of the fish; the rest he salted and kept for the journey. Afterward the two of them (Tobiah and Raphael) traveled on together till they drew near to Media. Tobit 6:6
Then the young man asked the angel this question: “Brother Azariah (Raphael), what medicine is in the fish’s heart, liver, and gall?” Tobit 6:7
Raphael said to the young man, “Brother Tobiah!” He answered, “Here I am!” Raphael continued, “Tonight we must stay in the house of Raguel, who is a relative of yours. He has a beautiful daughter named Sarah, Tobit 6:11
But Tobiah said to Raphael in reply, “Brother Azariah, I have heard that she has already been given in marriage to seven husbands, and that they have died in the bridal chamber. On the very night they approached her, they would die. I have also heard it said that it was a demon that killed them. Tobit 6:14
Raphael said to him: “Do you not remember your father’s commands? He ordered you to marry a woman from your own ancestral family. Now listen to me, brother; do not worry about that demon. Take Sarah. I know that tonight she will be given to you as your wife! Tobit 6:16
(Raphael speaking) As soon as the demon smells the odor, it will flee and never again show itself near her. Then when you are about to have intercourse with her, both of you must first get up to pray.Beg the Lord of heaven that mercy and protection be granted you. Do not be afraid, for she was set apart for you before the world existed. You will save her, and she will go with you. And I assume that you will have children by her, and they will be like brothers for you. So do not worry.” Tobit 6:18
When they entered Ecbatana, Tobiah said, “Brother Azariah (Raphael), bring me straight to the house of our kinsman Raguel.” So he did, and they came to the house of Raguel, whom they found seated by his courtyard gate. They greeted him first, and he answered, “Many greetings to you, brothers! Welcome! You have come in peace! Now enter in peace!” And he brought them into his house. Tobit 7:1
Afterward, Raguel slaughtered a ram from the flock and gave them a warm reception. When they had washed, bathed, and reclined to eat and drink, Tobiah said to Raphael, “Brother Azariah, ask Raguel to give me my kinswoman Sarah.” Tobit 7:9
The odor of the fish repulsed the demon, and it fled to the upper regions of Egypt; Raphael went in pursuit of it and there bound it hand and foot. Then Raphael returned immediately. Tobit 8:3
Then Tobiah called Raphael and said to him: Tobit 9:1
“Brother Azariah (Raphael), take along with you from here four servants and two camels and travel to Rages. Go to Gabael’s house and give him this bond. Get the money and then bring him along with you to the wedding celebration. Tobit 9:2
So Raphael, together with the four servants and two camels, traveled to Rages in Media, where they stayed at Gabael’s house. Raphael gave Gabael his bond and told him about Tobit’s son Tobiah, that he had married and was inviting him to the wedding celebration. Gabael got up and counted out for him the moneybags with their seals, and they packed them on the camels. Tobit 9:5
Weeping, he exclaimed, “I can see you, son, the light of my eyes!” Then he prayed, “Blessed be God, blessed be his great name, and blessed be all his holy angels (Raphael). May his great name be with us, and blessed be all the angels throughout all the ages. Tobit 11:14
Raphael said: “You know how we left your father. Tobit 11:2
So both went on ahead together, and Raphael said to him, “Take the gall in your hand!” And the dog ran along behind them. Tobit 11:4
Raphael said to Tobiah before he came near to his father: “I know that his eyes will be opened. Tobit 11:7
So Tobiah called Raphael and said, “Take as your wages half of all that you have brought back, and farewell!” Tobit 12:5
Raphael called the two of them aside privately and said to them: “Bless God and give him thanks before all the living for the good things he has done for you, by blessing and extolling his name in song. Proclaim before all with due honor the deeds of God, and do not be slack in thanking him. Tobit 12:6
I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand and serve before the Glory of the Lord.” Tobit 12:15
But Raphael said to them: “Do not fear; peace be with you! Bless God now and forever. Tobit 12:17
(Raphael speaking) So now bless the Lord on earth and give thanks to God. Look, I am ascending to the one who sent me. Write down all that has happened to you.” And he ascended. Tobit 12:20
They kept blessing God and singing his praises, and they continued to give thanks for these marvelous works that God had done, because an angel of God (Raphael) appeared to them. Tobit 12:22
#9 Choir – The Angels
“When we say: Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven, we are asking God to make us obedient so that His will may be done in us as it is done in heaven by His angels.” – St. Augustine
Angels are pure and holy spirits who live in union with God. Angels are messengers, and they do a variety of ministries for God. A lot of that ministry at the 9th choir are the angels who watch over us. Angels can take on human form if God wills it. According to the book of Hebrews, it is possible that we have talked with an angel (in human form) but not being aware of it if they did not reveal to us they were angels. The Church teaches each of us have a guardian angel. Like St. Raphael in the book of Tobit, our guardian angel helps us to make decisions that are in accord with God’s will (as the Guardian angel prayer says, “to light and guard, to rule and guide”). Angels help protect us from harm, and most importantly, from the Evil One. Angels are far superior to us in strength, wisdom, and intelligence. They pray to God for us, and they can provide messages to us through various promptings to help lead and guide us, especially with major life decisions. Our guardian angels have been with us ever since the day we were born, thus, we should pray to our Guardian Angel every day.
