Cardinals prospects Chase Davis, Travis Honeyman produce multi-hit games: Minor League Report (2024)

On a night when Class Low-A Palm Beach tallied 15 hits in a 6-2 win over St. Lucie, it was the Cardinals’ top two picks from the 2023 draft who helped contribute to the breakout.

Outfielders Chase Davis (first round) and Travis Honeyman (third round) combined for five hits while batting within the top four spots of Palm Beach’s batting order.

Davis, who batted fourth and started in center field, singled twice in four at-bats. The University of Arizona product drove in a run with a single to right field in the first inning then collected a second RBI on a sacrifice fly to right field in the sixth inning.

The multi-hit performance was Davis’s third in his last nine games. The left-handed hitting 22-year-old outfielder entered June with a .184 average through his first 38 games this season. Over 15 games in June, the University of Arizona product is batting .333 with a 1.126 on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS). He’s driven in 17 runs in June after driving in 17 runs total across April and May.

Davis’s production in June has raised his average to .220 and OPS to .712.

Honeyman, who batted second as Palm Beach’s designated hitter, went hitless in his first two at-bats on Tuesday before singling in each of his last three at-bats. Honeyman, a 22-year-old product of Boston College, improved to a .318 average and a .803 OPS with the three-hit day.

Since making his debut with Palm Beach after an injury delayed the start of his first professional season, Honeyman has played in 11 games for the PB-Cards and collected 14 hits in his first 44 at-bats. The three-hit game on Tuesday was his seventh multi-hit performance and third with at least three hits.

Right-handed pitcher Adam Kloffenstein, Class AAA Memphis: In his first outing since making his major league debut, Kloffenstein allowed five runs as he surrendered eight hits and issued five walks in 4 1/3 innings for Memphis. Kloffenstein pitched a scoreless first inning to open Memphis’s road game against Gwinnett before allowing three runs in the second inning — one of which came on a solo home run to open the frame and the other two on a two-out RBI double. He allowed another two runs in the third inning as he walked four batters that frame, allowed a single, and had a run score on a wild pitch. Kloffenstein, who threw a scoreless inning of relief in his MLB debut on June 20, came into had a 4-0 record and a 2.60 ERA in his last six Class AAA starts before Tuesday. The five runs allowed on Tuesday pushed his ERA up to 4.32

Outfielder Joshua Baez, Class High-A Peoria: The former second-round pick from the 2021 draft continued his bounce back in June with a two-hit game that included an RBI double in Peoria’s 8-1 win over the Quad Cities. Baez singled in the fifth inning and stole second after reaching base. The stolen base was the 20-year-old’s 15th in 17 attempts. He doubled in a run in the seventh inning to give him his 25th RBI of the year and 11th in June. Baez has hit .271 in his last 48 at-bats and owns a .357 on-base percentage and a .500 slugging percentage in his last 16 games. He owns a .237 average and a .716 OPS on the year.

Right-handed pitcher Inohan Paniagua, Class High-A Peoria: Paniagua worked around four walks to keep the Quad Cities to one run over five innings. Paniagua, 24, allowed one run and struck out five in his start. He’s allowed five runs, walked seven, and struck out 25 over his last four outings, one of which was a relief appearance. Paniagua, who has a 3.49 ERA in 14 games, is 3-3 as a starter and has a 3.64 ER and 43 strikeouts in 42 innings in nine starts.
