Which college football teams have the lead in recruiting for the 2025 class?

The transfer portal receives a lot of attention when it comes to college football recruiting, but the roster base for most teams remains incoming high school prospects. The chase for the recruiting champion in the 2025 class continues to heat up as power programs battle for the No. 1 position atop the team rankings.

Notre Dame and Ohio State arelocked ina fight for the best class at this point in May, flip-flopping positions at the top with each new commitment. Oklahoma surged up the team rankings this spring and is now inside the top-5 nationally after adding another Top247 recruit to its haul. Georgia, Oregon, Miami and Texas A&M aresome of the teams outside the top 10that could make big moves soon.

The early signing period is30weeks away with the new start date moved to Dec. 4 for the 2025 class. So, which teams have the edge in the recruiting race in early May?

Below is a look at the top 25 recruiting classes for the 2025 cycle as ofWednesday (May 8) at 1:32 AM ET:

25. Stanford Cardinal — 134.52

24. Ole Miss Rebels — 135.07

23. Oklahoma State Cowboys — 136.44

22. Miami Hurricanes — 137.30

21. Oregon Ducks — 137.50

20. Virginia Cavaliers — 148.55

Momentum is starting to build for Oregon in the 2025 class with four new commitments since the beginning of April. Four of the five pledges in the Ducks' haul are Top247 recruits, including Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei linebacker Nasir Wyatt, who became the most recent addition earlier this month. The average Composite rating per commit for Oregon (94.07) is third-best nationally for the 2025 class.

19. UCF Knights — 149.50

UCF can be a major threat in the Big 12 as it continues to recruit at a high level. The resources are there and the Knights are located in one of the best recruiting hotbeds in the country — Orlando. UCF maintains its positioning in the top 20 of the national team recruiting rankings for the 2025 class as it closes in on double-digit commits. The Knights have three four-star pledges secured, including Thomasville (Ga.) Thomas County Central Top247 athlete Kendarius Reddick.

18. Wisconsin Badgers — 150.37

Wisconsin is still pushing for its first Top247 commitment in the 2025 class, but the Badgers have a decent haul as things stand in early May. Head coach Luke Fickell and the staff in Madison added four new pledges to the class since the beginning of April which was enough to put Wisconsin just inside the top 20 nationally again. Wautoma (Wis.) offensive tackle Michael Roeske is still the top commit for the Badgers this cycle.

17. North Carolina Tar Heels — 151.09

North Carolina moved back inside the top 20 of the team recruiting rankings for the 2025 class with four new commitments in April. Union (Ky.) Cooper four-star edge rusher Austin Alexander and Marietta (Ga.) three-star edge rusher Anthony Kruah gave the Tar Heels a nice boost as two of the most recent additions. Gainesville (Ga.) Top247 offensive tackle Alex Payne is still the highest-rated commit for North Carolina in the class.The Tar Heels currently have the fourth-highest ranked class amongthe ACC.

16. Texas Tech Red Raiders — 152.79

Texas Tech and head coach Joey McGuire continue to add some of the best talent in comparison to the rest of the now-expanded Big 12. The Red Raiders secured the top-ranked class in the conference last cycle and are in position to repeat in the 2025 class with a strong haul at this point in May. Stephenville (Texas) Top247 wide receiver Tristian Gentry remains the headliner in the commitment class for Texas Tech having made his decision back in September 2023. The Red Raiders will need to pick up momentum again this spring and into the summer with just two new pledges since the beginning of March.

15. Tennessee Volunteers — 163.97

Tennessee continues to build its 2025 recruiting class around Brentwood (Tenn.) Academy five-star quarterback George MacIntyre, who committed back in January. The Volunteers have two additional Top247 pledges secured and added Memphis (Tenn.) Sheffield three-star receiver Radarious Jackson in April as a potential future target fortheir coveted quarterback prospect. Tennessee finished among the top 20 in the Composite team recruiting rankings in each of the previousthree cycles.Head coach Josh Heupel and the staff in Knoxville secured a top-15 class nationally in the previous cycle.

14. Georgia Bulldogs — 168.44

Do not sleep on Georgia and Kirby Smart in the 2025 class. The Bulldogs hold just eight commitments at this point in early May, but should still be in position to contend for one of the best hauls yet again this cycle when the signing periods come around. Georgia secured the No. 1 class nationally for the 2024 cycle. Its average rating per commit (93.04) in the 2025 class ranks seventh-highest in the country with five Top247 pledges already locked in. Kingsland (Ga.) Camden County four-star tight end Elyiss Williams headlines the haul.

13. Wake Forest Demon Deacons — 168.48

Wake Forest benefits from an earlyhaul of 15 commits up to this point in the 2025 class to position itselfinside the top 15 of the team recruiting rankings. Head coach Dave Clawson and the Demon Deacons addedsix new pledges since the beginning of April. None of those are Top247 prospects, but there are a handful of high three-star commits locked in to Wake Forest, including Sparta (N.J.) Pope John XXIII linebacker Tyler Houser, who headlines the growing list of pledges.

12. Arizona State Sun Devils — 173.26

Arizona State experienced a surge of commitments in April and momentum continues to carry into early May. The Sun Devils snagged one of the top receiver prospects in the Lone Star Stateas Pflugerville (Texas) Weiss Top247 wideout Adrian Wilson became the headliner of the haul for head coach Kenny Dillingham and Co. this spring. Arizona State finished outside the top 40 nationally in the Composite team recruiting rankings the past two cycles, but has itself in position to break that trend in 2025.

11. Texas A&M Aggies — 179.63

Texas A&M made up a lot of ground on the recruiting trail in April with sixnew commitments to its 2025 class, pushing it closer to a spot in the top 10. The Aggies landed one of the top passers in the cycle as Corona (Calif.) Centennial quarterback Husan Longstreet became the highest-ranked commitment for new head coach Mike Elko. Three of the pledges for Texas A&M are Top247 recruits with Longstreetsitting at No. 28 overall and No. 5 quarterback.

10. Auburn Tigers — 186.75

Seven of the earlycommitments in the 2025 class for Auburn are Top247 prospects. The Tigers' recruiting efforts under Hugh Freeze continue to produce favorable outcomes as Auburn looks to get back into SEC title contention. Auburn did see a few de-commitments in recent months, but made up for it with several pledges to keep its position inside the top 10. Winona (Miss.) Top247 linebacker Tyler Lockhart is the latest to join. If Auburnholds steadyin the current team recruiting rankings for the 2025 class, it would secure back-to-back top-10 hauls nationally.

9. Penn State Nittany Lions — 192.56

Penn State made astrong effortin February to climb into the top 10 of the team recruiting rankings for the 2025 class, but has been relatively quiet since. The Nittany Lions still hold a respectable position in the race despite just one new commitment since the beginning of March when Elba (Ala.) four-star running back Alvin Henderson made his pledge to James Franklin and Penn State in mid-April. The headliner up to this point for the Nittany Lions' haul is Jersey City (N.J.) Henry SnyderTop247 linebacker DJ McClary.

8. Syracuse Orange — 193.26

Only one program owns more commitments in the 2025 recruiting class than Syracuse. New head coach Fran Brown and the staff in Upstate New York continue to climb in the team rankings of the current cycle with all but one of their pledges coming since the beginning of March. Pawling (N.Y.) Trinity-Pawling School became the latest to join the haul for the Orange on Tuesday. Syracusehas never finished inside the top 30 of the team recruiting rankings inthe modern era.

7. Alabama Crimson Tide — 199.31

Alabama typically did not make its big recruiting push until the summer months under Nick Saban. However, new head coach Kalen DeBoer and the staff in Tuscaloosa are wasting no time putting together astrong haul in the 2025 cycle. The Crimson Tide added eight new commitments in March and April, including four Top247 prospects.Eastman (Ga.) Dodge County four-star linebacker Darrell Johnson still headlines the classup to this point as one of four top-100 recruits locked in to Alabama.

6. Clemson Tigers — 217.33

Commits:11

Clemson ranked second nationally in the 2025 team recruiting rankings at the beginning of March. But with only one new commitment since that point, the Tigers have lost a handful of spots in the race for the No. 1 class. Still, Dabo Swinney and the staff at Clemson hold a strong early haul, which includes seven Top247 commits. Durham (N.C.) Southern four-star defensive lineman Isaiah Campbell headlines the group of commitments for the Tigers. Clemsonowns the highest-ranked 2025 recruiting class in the ACC at this point.

5. USC Trojans — 219.57

USC was among the hottest teams on the recruiting trail in April withsix commitments in the 2025 class lastmonth. The Trojanssoaredup the team rankings and into the top 5 forthis current cycle.Lincoln Riley and USC also made big moves in March, adding a trio of top-100 recruits,including flipping Manchester (Ga.) five-star defensive lineman Justus Terry from Georgia. There is still a long way to go until the end of the 2025 cycle, but the Trojans are tracking to potentially build their highest-ranked recruiting class since Riley arrived in 2022.

4. Oklahoma Sooners — 225.05

Oklahoma has been on an absolute tear on the recruiting trail since the beginning of March withsix new commitments, enough to put the Sooners inside the top 5 of the latest team recruiting rankings for the 2025 class. Brent Venables and Co. secured one of the best in-state prospects for the cycle Tuesday as Oklahoma City (Okla.) Carl Albert Top247 cornerback Trystan Haynes became the most recent addition. The Soonersare getting in done in both Oklahoma and Texas with all but three commits hailing from the two states separated by the Red River.

3. LSU Tigers — 235.39

Brian Kelly and LSU maintain their spot in the top 3 of the team recruiting rankings for the 2025 class. A pair of five-star commits — Belleville (Mich.) quarterback Bryce Underwood and Duncanville (Texas) wide receiver Dakorien Moore — headline the early haul en route to Baton Rouge. The Tigers added three more four-star pledges to the class since the beginning of March,including Top247 offensive tackle Tyler Miller from Laurel (Miss.)LSU is on track to secure its third-consecutive top-10 recruiting class.

2. Ohio State Buckeyes — 255.56

Ohio State held the top spot in the early 2025 team recruiting rankings race for a couple weeks after landing a pair of commitments during its spring game back in April. The Buckeyes have a loaded class of pledges already this cycle with 10 (!!) Top247 recruits — including a trio of five-stars. Houston (Texas) North Shore cornerback Devin Sanchez and Birmingham (Ala.) Parker cornerback Na'eem Offord headline the haul alongside Bellefontaine (Ohio) quarterback Tavien St. Clair. Ohio State owns the highest average Composite rating per commit in the class (94.70).

1. Notre Dame Fighting Irish — 255.65

Notre Dame is back on top with the No. 1 recruiting class for the 2025 cycleafter landing another commitment from a Top247 prospect in late April. Tampa (Fla.) Berkley Prep cornerback Dallas Golden became the latest to join the Fighting Irish haul, which is the largest in the FBS at this point. Six of the commits for Notre Dame and head coach Marcus Freeman rank among the Top247 with three of those being key pieces in the secondary. Winter Garden (Fla.) West Orange safety Ivan Taylor headlines the pledge class.
