Someone stole not only my hard top last night, but also the cup holder insert thing in the center console!
They snagged my radar detector too.
They did however, try and put my soft top up before leaving my car in the rain. They put it most of the way up but they didn't latch it or shut the doors all the way, so it still got a little wet, but could have been worse.

It is a silver hard top in pretty good shape with a defroster and black on the inside.
I live in sellwood, or southeast portland. It is really close to milwaukie.

Is there anything to distinguish it from any other silver hardtop? I'll keep an eye out. You are watching craigslist and ebay I presume?

There isn't anything too obvious that would make it stand out. Just a small chip in the paint on the front of it where it meets the top of the windshield.
My guess is that the punk will give it a quick and sloppy paint job and then slap it onto his own ride.
I have been using craZed list to check all of the surrounding craigslist adds and I have been checking ebay and classifieds on different miata forums.
Thanks a bunch for keeping your eyes peeled.

He may not be smart enought to pull the Friends of PIR sticker off, either. Keep an eye out for that.

Nice looking car:thumbs:

That is so rude, sorry for the loss. Your probably right about where it will end up and what's worst is they probably have a worn soft top and all they're doing is looking for a cheap fix by using a stolen hardtop.

It's pretty easy to spot Miata's with hard tops since most don't have them. Anyone with a car of your quality level is not going to steal one so look for a ratty looking one or a ricer with a HT that has a fresh paint job and in better condition than the car.

My car hard top was stolen as well the same night in the exact same location! I drive a 90 miata with a red hard top, I live in the sellwood area, and they stole the hard top in the middle of the night and attempted to pull the soft top up. However, my soft top is ripped so it didn't work. I called the police, and have been searching craigslist everyday hoping it will turn up. I can't believe that happened to you as well!

You should both inform the police of the other's situation, to make sure that they know that the two cases likely tie in with each other.

On the downside (or upside?), this means you're dealing with someone who wants to resell the tops, not just use them for himself.

Some people will sit on stolen goods for months while they wait for them to "cool down". Keep looking for your top on CL, eBay, etc until you find it. Persistence is key.

Unless it's a SM driver looking for a few extra spares?

That SUCKS! I just saw your car yesterday morning parked where you work. I'll keep an eye out for it.

Any way one can get a list from the DMV of all the miatas registered in your city/town. Then you can do some driving and look around the area? Before anybody says anything...I know....it doesn't mean a Miata owner took it...but its a start. Sheeesh.

There have been other case in the area. Few months back when I was purchasing tires and lady came up and started talking to us. Questions started to get a little personal and it turned out she had had her top stolen. White top and mine is on a dark green model.

Son bought a top off CL last fall. Don't recall if it was in Vancouver or Portland area.

I'm still checking on CL for some of the $5k worth of tools stolen from my shop close to Christmas.

Think about this for a second. If you could get a list like that, so could thieves.

Is it that easy to steal a hard top off one of these?

Yup. bendersan and I discussed this today. No mention of broken glass in this thread. Lock your damn doors!

Bender-san

Another good purchase for hardtop-equipped Miatae parked outdoors is the locking side latch kit.

As a side note: I watched this happen about 10 years ago with nearly every single Honda and DSM on the road. Then, about 5 years ago, it was AE86 Corollas and 240SX's. The latest automotive trend among younger people typically creates a large market for theft items.

Well if anybody wants to buy a replacement, I have a dark green hardtop in decent condition for sale in Salem, Or. I purchased it from a friend while living in Florida. His name was Charles and drove a slammed 2002 LS with 6UL's and a rollbar. I can't remember his username but he was obsessed with fog lights.

I feel really bad for everyone who has had theirs stolen, especially considering the amount of rain this region of the country is accustomed to.

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but mainly I just want people to know, the one I am about to post here, and on craigslist is not stolen.

As an aside, this probably makes me look even more suspicious, but oh well.

Will Have pictures soon!

That **** sucks. I know Miata is not hot for thieves like 240SX is but hardtop can get good money. I'll have to think of a way to secure a hardtop. Too bad, they are not metal or it could be welded, riveted to the car body like S2000. (I don't like soft-top, fyi)

I hope you recover them soon.

Mobius

There are bolt on plates to replace the latches, from rennenmetal and I presume others; there's also a company making a locking device to physically secure the side latches. Can't recall their name at the moment.

Bummer, last year it was the San Francisco Bay area that was hit hard. Maybe the thieves moved north, watch the Northern California Cragslist for hardtops.

I find it so hard to believe that thefts of hard-tops are becoming so common (altho i will surely realize if/when it may happen to me).

It would take a few minutes to steal a hardtop, wouldn't it?
First, they would have to break into the car to release the interior fasteners (and to know where they are).
Then, it would take more than one person to remove it quickly and get-away.

It seems (to me) to be a high-risk venture of getting caught?
If I were a thief, I would think that a quick smash-and-grab of potential interior contents, (GPS, cellphone, designer sunglasses, wallets, coins in the ashtray, etc) would be much easier and faster?

I have a hard-enough time installing and removing my hardtop (with anal care), that I could not imagine any petty-thief taking the time to steal one.
Do you think it might be for personal use?
MAYBE?

Who else would take that risk and then advertise it for sale on craigslist (to a limited market)??
Especially if the victim posted a "stolen-item" notice (is that even allowed?)
If you were a thief, wouldn't it just be easier to steal someone's Tag-Huer/Rolex, even from their wrist?

Don't car-alarms help?
What about window-etching?
I'm now thinking I should do this!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VIN_etching

I would be devastated if this happened to me (I have $200 deductible on comprehensive, but maybe I should ask if this is covered).

I was curious if the hardtop would be covered, as it is a factory accessory.

I'm really sorry this happened to you. I just installed a pair of toploc's the other day because I'm preparing for a future drive down the 1 to LA. Didn't think stuff like this was common in Portland.

I'm really sorry for your loss. Despite living in a nicer area myself, we've had several incidents of people walking though the neighborhood and going through unlocked cars. A RHT may be a bit more logistically difficult, but its money in the bank if you can offload it.

Remember that there are agrigate craigslist viewers as well, so you can easily search a much larger area. Allofcraigs.com for example.

I think it has to be a factory installed accessory to be covered, but I maybe wrong.:dunno:

Price seems really low. No additional information whatsoever. It's probably totally legit, but if my silver hardtop was stolen, I would definitely check this one out.

I just saw that too and thought that was a bit cheap for a hardtop, although no information on quality was given.
