How do I know if my fuel line is bad? ›

One indicator is engine performance. When a vehicle has a broken fuel line, it develops issues with engine performance, causing problems like stalling misfires, or hard starting. In some cases, broken or leaky fuel lines can prevent your vehicle from running because of the flaws in the engine performance.

Unfortunately there is no fuel pump reset on your Chevy, this feature was mostly just on Ford cars.

Age is usually the culprit behind clogged or leaking fuel lines. Fuel system maintenance can help prevent problems with the fuel lines.

If the diameter is too small: you won't be able to support your horsepower goal. If the diameter is too big: the lines will take longer to pressurize.

Fuel System Restriction

Things like line bends and diameter, filter quality, and injector size can affect the fuel system pressure. Mismatching the rest of the fuel system components with the fuel pump can either increase or decrease fuel system pressure and immediately cause a decrease in overall performance.

Airlocks occur when air enters your fuel system and keeps the diesel fuel from reaching the injectors. Unable to pass fuel through the bubble stuck in your system, typical symptoms include difficulty starting the engine, reduced engine power after starting, and, in severe cases, the inability to start the engine.

Most all equipment has a hand priming pump lever to pump fuel through the system and replace trapped air. (Check operator's manual.) Pump several times until full flow, without air bubbles, escapes from the bleed plug holes.

If you fail to bleed your engine, fuel will build up in the lines and prevent air from escaping. This can result in a variety of engine performance problems, including harsh idling, sluggish acceleration, and difficulties starting.

Air can enter the fuel system in various ways. One of the main ways is to suck air through a faulty gasket, a crack or cut in the fuel hose, and through faulty seals in the fuel filter. In addition, air can enter the system when replacing the fuel filter if the procedure has not been carried out correctly.

A bad fuel line will show symptoms like poor gas mileage, fuel smell, and visible fuel leaks.

Industry experts recommend having a fuel system cleaning every 30,000 miles, give or take, to keep the system in good shape. The interval could vary depending on what your manufacturer outlines for your specific vehicle's model/year. A professional technician should always do a fuel system cleaning.

A 3/8”id fuel line can easily support 600 HP given sufficient “pump head”! Given a big enough pump a 3/8” steel line could support 1000 HP. The simple way to know is to install an electronic fuel pressure gauge.

For instance, an 8AN feed line and 6AN return line on a 1000 horsepower gasoline or race gas powered LS with 30psi is sufficient. However, on an E85 combo, we recommend a 10AN feed and an 8AN return minimum for the same setup minus the fuel change.

By itself, a high-flow fuel pump will not increase power, but it will provide the ability to increase power by providing a higher flow of fuel to the engine when major engine upgrades are performed.
