Why are people leaving Nexus Mods? ›

A lot of modders are leaving Nexus because of some of the frankly unethical decisions they've made. The nexus has made a rather invasive u-turn of late when they should only just publish. They even insulted their own long-term users in the process.

We're changing how we reward mod authors in our community through our Donation Points system. DP earned from April 2024 onwards will be calculated using a new algorithm intended to distribute the pool of points more fairly to mod authors who make great content for the community.

Each month Nexus Mods will donate a set amount of money into a central donation pool from which the total DP available that month will be calculated. At the end of each month, mod authors will receive DP based on how many unique downloads their mods received that month.

Sometimes if a modder gets into a tussle about borrowing assets, they hide the mod until that is resolved. Occasionally it's a modder who feels they weren't getting enough donations. It can be a mod that was fundamentally broken in some way, and without the time to fix it the modder just hides or removes it.

However, if the file is found to be in violation of our policies or guidelines, it may be removed permanently and the uploader might receive a notice, warning, or ban as described above - at the discretion of staff. Enquiries about file moderation should be directed to support@nexusmods.com.

1. The Core of the Issue: Nexus Mods banned modifications that aimed to remove They/Them pronouns from Starfield. This decision by one of the largest modding communities has sparked a debate about the limits of creative freedom and the role of modding platforms in shaping game content.

All mod files shared on our website must pass through several security checks before they can be downloaded by the community. If any of these checks fail during the upload process, the file will be quarantined and will be unavailable until it has been reviewed by a moderator.

Donation Points (shortened to "DP") are the local currency of Nexus Mods that mod authors can accumulate, through unique file page downloads, that can then be redeemed for rewards through our storefront, donated to charity, or shared with other users.

All mods are free to download, we do not limit which access based on our membership status. You do not need to pay for mods that are over 3MB in size. Free members are restricted to 3MB/s download speeds. Premium members are not capped at can download the maximum speed their ISP provides.

What has happened? In the very early morning of 8th November 2019 we noticed suspicious activity by a potentially malicious third party actor against our services. Using an exploit in our legacy codebase, our logs confirm that they accessed a small number of user records from the old user service.

Why does Nexus Mods have so many ads? ›

As you all likely know, Nexus Mods makes use of advertising on the website to create a source of income which is subsequently used to pay for the range of expenses the site accrues in its daily operations. I'm sure we'll all agree that adverts, in any format, really are a pain in the backside.

We require all users to login to a Nexus Mods account when downloading to prevent abuse of our systems, to provide additional security and so we can reliably reward the mod authors on Nexus Mods via our Donation Points system (which relies on us being able to record accurate download statistics).
